Diversification: not putting all your eggs in one basket

Spreading money across different sectors reduces the damage when any one of them has a bad year.

The idea

Different assets react differently to the same news. When stocks fall, gold or bonds often hold up. When interest rates rise, property may cool while currencies move. Holding several kinds of assets means one bad performer hurts less.

Diversify across, not just within

Owning ten tech stocks is not real diversification because they tend to fall together. True diversification spreads across asset classes (stocks, bonds, crypto, property, commodities), regions and strategies.

What it cannot do

Diversification reduces risk, it does not remove it. In severe market stress many assets fall together for a while. It also means you will never hold only the single best performer, and that is the price of staying safe from the worst.

How Redtail helps

When you build your plan you split your funds across sectors with a simple slider. Our portfolio view shows your mix at a glance, so you can see if one sector has grown too large.

Key takeaways

  • Spread across asset classes, not only across names.
  • Diversification lowers risk but never to zero.
  • Review your mix at least once a year.
