Risk and return: why bigger rewards mean bigger swings

Every investment trades potential reward for risk. Understand the trade-off so you can pick a level you can live with.

The core trade-off

Assets that can grow quickly, like crypto or growth stocks, can also fall quickly. Assets that move gently, like government bonds, usually offer smaller potential gains. There is no free lunch: higher potential return comes with higher risk.

Types of risk

  • Market risk. The whole market falls and drags your assets down.
  • Volatility. Prices swing a lot in the short term.
  • Liquidity risk. You cannot sell quickly at a fair price.
  • Currency risk. Exchange rates move against you.
  • Concentration risk. Too much money sits in one asset or sector.

Risk tolerance and risk capacity

Tolerance is how much loss you can stomach emotionally. Capacity is how much loss your finances can absorb. You need both to be comfortable. A young professional with steady income has high capacity. Someone close to retirement has lower capacity even if they feel brave.

How we label risk

On Redtail every sector carries a risk label from Low to High. Your plan blends sectors so the overall risk matches the level you choose: conservative, balanced or growth.

Important: past performance does not guarantee future results, and you can lose some or all of the money you invest.

Key takeaways

  • Higher potential return always comes with higher risk.
  • Match your plan to both your comfort and your finances.
  • A mix of sectors keeps the overall ride smoother.
